What problems or life situations has yoga helped you manage? I started practicing yoga because I had been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. My doctor told me to give it a try to help manage my anxiety and overall inflammation. I fell in love with the practice immediately because I felt relief from my chronic pain. My anxiety was much less and I felt like I was a part of something bigger. 15 years later I use my yoga practice daily. Sometimes it’s movement and sometimes it is one of the other 8 limbs of yoga. Over all the years of practicing and studying yoga I have become aware that there is always something to help heal you. You may need to get extra creative or completely switch up your routine or even beliefs, but I believe yoga (in all of its forms) can heal us. I use yoga to better understand my illness and how to treat it… but I also use it to learn how to better myself. Yoga is one of the only things that gave me my life back after I felt like my illness had taken all control from me.

What do you hope your students walk away with after one of your classes? My goal is to make yoga fun and accessible for everyone while still bringing the fire and challenge. I want all of my students to have a moment where they thought they couldn’t and then proved themselves wrong. Maybe it’s with a peak pose or transition and maybe it is simply not thinking of their to-do list for an hour.

What helps to keep the spark of teaching alive for you? When I taught my first class I had the overwhelming feeling of “this is what I am supposed to do”. And I still feel that with every class I teach. As I said earlier, Yoga gave me my life back. When I don’t practice my body, mind, and soul let me know. On the days when I wish I had some time off, or am not feeling particularly inspired to teach, I remind myself of the magic yoga holds and how my job is to bring that magic into other people’s lives. That right there keeps my love for teaching burning bright.
