How did you get introduced to yoga?
I was introduced to yoga back in 1999-2000 when I was working with troubled youth. I was living in a yurt out Croy Canyon, and my friend Courtney Samway asked if I wanted to go to a yoga class at the Gateway building. I said, “sure, why not?!”. My very first class was a vinyasa class which I specifically recall had us practicing handstands, and I just remember thinking to myself, “this is HARD!” , and when trying to go upside down thought to myself, “I so hate but love that she is putting me outside of my comfort zone and making me do this!” And it very much intrigued and hooked me in that it got me to go inside myself and into my “stuff.”
How do you combine your passion for traditional Chinese medicine and yoga? Shortly after I began practicing yoga, I decided to pursue the path of teaching and have been teaching since 2001. A few years later I was on my way to grad school to study Chinese Medicine and have been teaching and practicing Chinese Medicine since 2006. In the past 5 years I have shifted my yoga practice into a slower-flowing and more therapeutic style. I really enjoy combining myofascial release techniques into the mix now as it allows students to learn about their physical body and holding patterns. Therefore, I believe this experience and format is empowering each participant to understand and know their physical bodies where the flowing portion of class also allows for decompression yet drops us into the deeper emotional and spiritual state.
What is currently inspiring your personal practice and the practice you teach in class? My personal practice currently and during COVID shifted to meditation in a BIG way! Long hikes/rides also became very important as my way of maintaining my overall well-being, state of mind... my sanity really! My own physical practice has become very gentle and incorporates some pranayama and myofascial release. I’m growing to truly appreciate simplicity and the “less is more” philosophy. And I’m doing my best to emphasize less being more in my classes, with my clients and within myself. It’s become a beautiful inspiration and is the next challenge on my journey!
